UPDATED 06.28.2023 – David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan have officially been cast in the leading roles in James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy, which will kick off the new DC Universe.
In the ever-expanding landscape of superhero movies, DC Comics has remained a prominent force, and one of their most iconic characters, Superman, continues to capture the imagination of fans worldwide. As part of the rebooted DC Universe, Superman: Legacy is set to be released in a couple of years. Casting rumors have begun to circulate about the film.
In January 2023, directors James Gunn and Peter Safran announced their initial plans for the DC Universe following their appointment as co-CEOs of DC Studios in November 2022. As soon as the DC Universe is reset by The Flash, Gunn intends to expand the franchise to TV, film, and animation, starting with Creature Commandos, Waller, and Superman: Legacy with a new actor in the title role.
2025 Will Be the Year of Superman: Legacy in the DC Universe
In addition to The Brave and the Bold and Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, the DC Extended Universe will also include Swamp Thing and a Wonder Woman prequel series named Paradise Lost.
In his retelling of Superman’s story, James Gunn emphasizes legacy, consistent with the title. In addition to his Kryptonian heritage, he also has a human one. This has also been hinted at in the official synopsis along with the title.
The official synopsis says that Superman is reconciling his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent in Smallville, Kansas in Superman: Legacy. In an age when kindness is regarded as old-fashioned, he embodies justice, truth, and the American ideal.
Until a casting announcement is announced, these are the only details we know about Superman: Legacy. Fans still hope Henry Cavill will return to the Man of Steel franchise, so this announcement is highly anticipated.
Superman: Legacy Release Date
Currently, only Superman: Legacy has been given a release date, while Creature Commandos and Waller have been given rough release dates for 2024. Gunn and the DC team will have plenty of time to perfect Superman: Legacy before its release on July 11, 2025.
Superman: Legacy is the first live-action movie in the franchise. The Fantastic Four and Avengers: The Kang Dynasty of Marvel Studios are both scheduled to be released in 2025, and The Batman – Part II of DC Elseworlds will also be released in October 2025.
