Every year, Dolce & Gabbana leaves jaws dropped with its annual Alta Moda show. For summer 2023, D&G chose the infamous Puglia, in the heel of Italy. This year’s Dolce & Gabbana Alta Moda is shaping up to be one of the best ever.
The purpose of this year’s Alta Moda was to highlight real Italian life within Puglia. The clothes themselves were not minimal, but more simple than years passed.
Dolce & Gabbana’s Intention
For Alta Moda 2023, Stefano Gabbana and Domenico Dolce sought to create the biggest and most authentic show of their lifetime. Inspired by their village location, they sought to include the people of Puglia in the show to celebrate their roots and to show the world something real.
The streets were filled with locals engaging in handmade crafts, cooking food for the over 500 guests, and enjoying the Alta Moda show alongside A-list celebrities and models. If not for the models in extravagant clothes, it may have looked more like a local event, not a Dolce & Gabbana fashion show.
The Perfect Location
Puglia is an ancient region of Italy known for its stunning landscape, sandy beaches, beautiful cities and ancient forests. Home to over 4 million people, Puglia represents the beauty of Southern Italy.
The Alta Moda show was held in Alberobello, a Unesco World Heritage Site. The picturesque city dates back to the 14th century and is home to cone-roofed stone buildings called trulli. The local craftspeople were present, creating handmade items such as orecchiette, weaving straw baskets, and carving children’s toys. Dolce & Gabbana chose Puglio because of its ties to ancient Italy.
Additionally, D&G wanted a town filled with authentic people. They wanted artisans, farmers, cooks, and ordinary people to fill the streets of their show. After reaching out to residents in Puglia one year prior, everyone wanted to be a part of the show.
The Alta Moda Fashion
In years prior, the Alta Moda fashion show was filled with crystals, silver, and gold, but not this year. This year’s fashion included softer fabrics, with silhouettes reminiscent of a slip dress, worked from transparent lace. The overall vibe of the collection was sensual and straightforward, with clear callbacks to the village’s architecture.
Many of the models wore giant cones for hats inspired by the roofs of the trulli. Others wore headscarves and carried woven baskets. Dolce & Gabbana sought out locals to help crochet various pieces. In Alberobello, most of the population knows how to crochet. Families have passed down the skills for generations. While D&G is known for its handmade items, the Alberobello residents brought their legacy to the clothing.
Some models wore extravagant trains, hoop skirts, or beautiful gowns made from sewn flowers or woven material, reminiscent of basket weaving.
